#10 – Never study philosophy

#007

Be interested in philosophy – sure. Read up a little bit – why not. But study it – never, I told myself. I even made a note in my ‘don’t forget’ pocket book. I expected myself to not remember this conclusion. It was meant to be a double protection for myself. Don’t forget – never study philosophy. That was the message to myself.

But why not study philosophy and delve into the minds of some of the deepest and most profound thinkers in our history? There are plenty of reasons why you should engage yourself strongly with ideas and concepts that (partly) shaped the world. It gives you sense of agency. You might develop your own thoughts about what should be and what not. There is a change you learn to judge and perceive situations differently. You even might question oppressive forces and authorities around you intelligently. (more…)

#9 – Contemporary Q&A without a Q

#9

History tells subjectively us that we live at the most progressive of times. Enlightenment thinkers and existentialists paved the way for us. We enjoy more comfort than the generation of our parents. We are free to do plenty of what we like to do. We have instant access to most of knowledge that was collected over past decades or even centuries.

We have answers over answers. Everything can be figured out or is already. Sometimes we are even presented with answers to questions that we didn’t even know we had. Well, perhaps we didn’t actually have the question. Social media knows whom you should be friends with and search engines know what you are looking for before you even look. Even your telephone knows where you are, although you didn’t desire to know. (more…)

#8 – The sublime

#8

Descending beyond the horizon, the day starts to slowly fade out. In the twilight one wants to rest and let bygone be bygone. Some might say it is a romantic scene. Perhaps it is. But perhaps it isn’t the candlelight that emerges.

Scenes similar to those of Caspar David Friedrich evoke and stir up emotions. Some might even call it the sublime – the ultimate beauty. Something that is so magical and stimulating in form and content that it objectively has to be called beautiful. When the light changes and warmer colours and tones emerge up in the sky, the world around us seems to soften. It can be so powerful that it lets us forget the torments of the day. (more…)

#7 – Momentary freeze

#7

Surrounded by buzzling lights and constant streams of flashes – continuously creating impressions that demand to be taken in. Sometimes life comes around fast. It becomes faster than one is prepared for. The surrounding world starts to blur and gradually each impression becomes indistinguishable from another. The sensitivity of perception no longer can function properly, but creates a different reality. It is a reality that is not bound by timely restrictions.

High in ambition, but incapable of dealing with any impression, one freezes the moment. Sorting out and tracing each light back to its source, the job seems endlessly complicated. The question of ‘how to deal with it?’ arises. The impossibility of dealing with everything at the same time does not prevent you from trying it anyway. Resulting in failure, one is shattered in despair. (more…)

#5 – Caffeine paintings

#5

Humid density in my head and an urge to do something about it, brings coffee on the table. Not hot, but drenched in ice and soaked in a shot of sugary milk. It is a change – a drastic one – from the typical strong and hot blackness that usually fuels caffeine-addicted body. One could ask about the reasons for this change, but those are probably unimportant.

Not being used to stirring the coffee, unexpected spillages appeared on the surface underneath. Due to personal indifference and lethargy, the stains remained on the table. The seemingly undissolving sugar forced further and stronger action, which resulted in additional liquid splashing on the white surface. (more…)
